Overview
Since 2005, NDI has conducted programs in Maldives related to voter and civic education, domestic election observation and youth and women’s political empowerment. Through its programs in-country, NDI aims to strengthen the capacity and resilience of Maldivian democratic institutions by promoting government transparency and accountability and enhancing information integrity.
NDI’s current programs cover a number of focus areas, including supporting local civil society to more effectively involve citizens in public matters, help government institutions become more open and inclusive and work with media organizations to improve media and digital literacy. NDI’s newest programming applies participatory democracy approaches to environmental governance, building citizen awareness of environmental topics and providing them the space to collectively identify priorities and recommendations for responsive policy.
