SANDER SCHULTZ

Sander Schultz serves as NDI's chief financial officer, based in Washington, D.C. He has held this position since joining the Institute in October 1995. Previous to NDI, Mr. Schultz worked for more than eight years at the Big Five accounting firm of KPMG where he specialized in providing auditing and consulting services to not-for-profit organizations. He earned a B.S. in accounting from James Madison University and is a certified public accountant in the State of Maryland.

PATRICK MERLOE

Patrick Merloe is a strategic advisor to NDI. From 1993 to 2022 he served as NDI’s senior associate and director of electoral programs. Pat has over 40 years of experience in promoting citizen empowerment, governmental accountability and public policy advocacy. He has participated in over 190 international missions for NDI to more than 65 countries, concerning political rights, electoral integrity and democratic development.

Dr. Eva Busza

Dr. Eva Busza is the Regional Director for Eurasia at NDI. Previous appointments include Vice President, Policy and Sector Collaboration at the Council of Ontario Universities, Vice President, Research and Programs at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and Director of Policy and Strategic Planning for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. She started her professional career at NDI working on global democracy and governance programs. She has over twenty years’ experience working with government, business, and civil society on a range of social, economic, and security programs globally. Ms.

ROBERT HURD

Robert Hurd is NDI’s director of program development, supporting the Institute’s efforts to design, develop, and secure new projects and funding opportunities. Before joining NDI in 2004, Mr. Hurd managed program development efforts at the Institute of International Education (IIE), where he was responsible for identifying new project opportunities, proposal design and development, and liaising with potential partners. Prior to IIE, Mr.

Lisa Oliveri

Lisa Oliveri serves as the National Democratic Institute’s Director of Global Risk Management, Security, and Operations.  

JENNIFER GANEM

Jennifer Ganem is a lawyer with more than 18 years of experience in supporting programs to strengthen democratic institutions and human rights and serves as Counsel for NDI. Prior to this position Ms. Ganem served as Senior Advisor as well as Deputy Director for Asia Programs at the Institute. In her initial position at NDI she opened and managed the Institute’s first office in Indonesia where she helped to oversee NDI’s programs in support of the first democratic elections in that country. Before joining NDI, Ms.

CHRISTOPHER FOMUNYOH

Dr. Christopher Fomunyoh is currently the Senior Associate for Africa and Senior Advisor to the President at the National Democratic Institute (NDI.) He has organized and advised international election observation missions to Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

From May 25 to June 17, 2016, the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening (CEPPS) deployed an assessment team to Kinshasa to examine voter registration and election preparations. This report includes the findings of the assessment team and provides a technical analysis of the voter registration and election preparations corresponding to the time period when the team was on the ground. The ultimate goal of this assessment is to promote informed and inclusive discussion regarding election planning and timelines among electoral stakeholders. 

THOMAS A. DASCHLE

Senator Daschle is the Chair of the National Democratic Institute’s Board of Directors. He is the founder and CEO of The Daschle Group, A Public Policy Advisory of Baker Donelson. Senator Daschle served his home state, South Dakota, in the Senate from 1987 to 2005.  He is the only senator to have served twice as both Majority and Minority Leader.  In addition, Senator Daschle is a Member of the Board of Directors at the Center for American Progress and a co-founder of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

HARRIET C. BABBITT

Harriet (Hattie) Babbitt is an attorney in Washington, D.C., where she provides counsel at the intersection of law, policy and public interest.

Ms. Babbitt serves on a number of not-for-profit and for-profit boards. She is co-chair of the Global Water Challenge (GWC),  serves as vice-chair of the World Resource Institute (WRI) and serves on the boards of NDI, The Water Initiative (TWI), and the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University (ISD). She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
