As authoritarians around the world gain more ground, unity between democratic actors is more important than ever. Illiberal leaders are increasingly uniting themselves to undermine democratic standards and spread distrust in transnational agreements and multilateral bodies, and political leaders in long-standing democracies have failed to offer a meaningful response. An international, multipartisan collaboration of party networks could strengthen unity among democratic political parties around the world through joint action and knowledge sharing.
For decades, party international organizations have mobilized like-minded political parties from around the world to effectively push a joint agenda. However, democratically-minded political parties need international, cross-ideological spaces to collaborate and support the defense of democratic institutions in their constituent countries. To address this gap, NDI has created a network for party internationals seeking to improve their crossparty collaboration. The purpose of the network is to share knowledge, strategies and best practices for coalition building and to foster and develop democratic solidarity. To assist political parties, party networks, and party practitioners with their own efforts pursuing crossparty collaboration, NDI produced a report detailing the creation of the network and issuing recommendations for creating successful crossparty collaboration initiatives.
